I
took this overland trip with Exodus
Travels, in the
Spring of 2003. It lasted just about
4 weeks and took me from Zimbabwe to Kenya overland.
This was my first time in southern and east Africa, I
was surprised by the vast diversity of landscapes and
cultures as we passed from country to country. Out of
all the places I visited, I think Zambia would have to
be my favorite. Zambians were exceptionally hospitable
and the country itself is filled with vast expanses of
immaculate, uninhabited land. Camping in the highlands
of Zambia was the best part of my trip; huge seemingly
untouched pine forests went on for miles. At night, it
cooled down significantly, the sky was crystal clear
filled with billions of shining stars.
Zanzibar was also amazing, Arabs, from Oman, colonized
Zanzibar hundreds of years ago and used it as a slave
trading outpost. Omani rule of the island has since ended
but I almost felt like I was back in Oman in parts
of the old city. There is a interesting mix of African
and Arabic culture in Zanzibar, I wish I could have stayed
a bit longer there. I even was able to use some Arabic
there.
Highlights of this
trip...
- Absolutely the
best thing I did on this entire trip was to go whitewater
rafting down the Zambezi River on the boaders of Zimbabwe
and Botswana.
- Camping out
in the evergreen forests that covered the highlands of Zambia
- Old Town Zanzibar
- Carnivore restaurant
in Nairobi, where I ate Zebra, Wildebeest, Crocodile, Élan,
Ostrich, Wild Boar and a few other things that I can't recall
- Taking an ultra
light flight over Victoria Falls at sunrise
- Horseback riding
through a bunch of villages in Kandi Beach, Malawi
